The welding process is not an exact science because the operator’s skill plays a part in the welding seam’s creation; this variable has a considerable impact on the final result.

The most common welding processes are in fact called manual (MMA-TIG) or semi-manual (MIG-MAG), and in both cases the ability to correctly set-up the generator is just as essential as the welder’s manual skill, especially when the welding seam is to be put under a lot of strain.

Assessing the quality of a weld is complicated for a non-trained eye, even when it looks good at first glance. On the other hand, even a less-than-trained eye can distinguish if the weld was produced with or without the use of a protection gas.

The welding processes that make use of a gas protection are aesthetically better because the welding arc is more stable and accurate and thus more manageable (few welding ledges). Even mechanically speaking (penetration and depth), the welding processes carried out with the use of a protection gas are of higher quality.

To equip a welding machine with a gas bottle it is necessary to acquire a gas hose and mounting clamps, any gas bottle fitting, a pressure reducer and an argon bottle adapter.

The gas bottle fittings vary based on the bottle and its gas; thanks to the gas bottle adapter, we will be able to use the same pressure reducer on different types of bottles and gasses.

In detail:

  • CO2 bottle: has a MALE socket and can be connected to a pressure reducer with a FEMALE CO2 plug. It is not possible to connect the gas bottle adapter to this type of bottle, it is necessary to acquire the correct pressure reducer.
  • ArCO2 (mixture) bottle: has a FEMALE socket and thus can be connected directly to a pressure reducer with a MALE argon connector; should you already have a pressure reducer with a female CO2 gas bottle connector, you will only need to acquire a male-male argon bottle adapter.
  • Argon bottle: has a FEMALE socket and thus can be connected directly to a pressure reducer with a MALE argon connector; should you already have a pressure reducer with a female CO2 gas bottle connector, you will only need to acquire a male-male argon bottle adapter.

You will be able to adjust the amount of dispensed gas from the handle, and then view it on the manometer. You can then connect the generator thanks to the welding gas hose.

It is important to remember that the gas bottle connectors do not need any seal or insulation (such as Teflon, silicon, spray, etc.) and that you only need to connect them.
