TIG DC WELDING MACHINE FOR IRON AND STAINLESS STEEL (TIG welding machine for stainless steel / TIG welding machine for iron)

In the industrial sector, there are various welding techniques and methodologies, and each process may be more or less suitable for a given application. The ideal welding process is established based on various factors and on the desired result.

The main welding processes most commonly used in the various production chains are MIG/MAG (continuous wire), MMA (coated electrode) and TIG.

When the aesthetic factor is important, the most suitable welding process is TIG (Tungsten inert gas). The high aesthetic quality is due to the strong stability of the electric arc and the absence of welding sparks. There are two main categories of TIG welding machines:

- DC TIG welding machine for iron and stainless-steel welding

- AC/DC TIG welding machine for aluminum and aluminum alloys welding. AC/DC welding power sources are also suitable for iron and stainless steel.

How does a stainless-steel TIG welding machine work? This specific category of welding machine requires a TIG torch with an infusible tungsten electrode with a diameter that varies based on the thickness of the part that you have to weld, a ground cable with clamp connected to the base material to ignite the electric arc, and a cylinder of Argon, an inert gas that protects the molten metal in the weld pool from oxidation.

The stainless-steel TIG welding machine uses the polarity difference between the electrode tip and the base material connected to the ground to generate the electric arc. The heat generated by the electric arc allows the material to melt and creates the weld pool. The TIG process generates a very stable welding arc and therefore allows for easy control of the fusion, and, thanks to this peculiarity, the operator has the possibility of adding material to the weld pool to reinforce and give structure to the weld bead.

The TIG iron and stainless-steel welding machine use an inert gas as gaseous protection, which does not cause chemical reactions in contact with other materials. The most commonly used gas is argon on an industrial level, or a mixture of argon and helium.

The iron TIG welding machine, intended for professional use and therefore high-end use, allows the operator to modify all the welding parameters, customizing the entire process based on his needs and working style. The parameters that can be customized in professional stainless steel TIG welding machines are:

- Pre-gas

- Initial current

- Slope-up

- Welding current

- Secondary current (pulse)

- Percentage of working secondary current

- Pulsed frequency

- Slope-down

- End current

- Post gas

Top-Welding has selected some models of professional level TIG iron welding machines that allow you to work on all the parameters listed above:

Lincoln Invertec 175 TP

GYS Protig 161 DC

Esab Rogue ET200iP PRO

Helvi Galileo 219 HF

Lincoln Invertec 220TPX

All iron TIG welding machine models also have the option of selecting the 2T and 4T function that manages torch control operation:

- 2T: the arc is ignited when the torch button is pressed and remains active until it is released

- 4T: the arc is ignited when the torch button is pressed (and can be released) and is deactivated when the button is pressed and released.

Another widely used feature by professionals who use TIG welding machines on thin plates on a daily basis is spot welding. This welding technique consists in making the bead with a series of close and aligned spots until the two edges are completely connected. High-end stainless-steel TIG welding machines equipped with a more comprehensive control panel give the operator the opportunity to set an automatic spot-welding time. This function is called SPOT or TACK.

Another factor that differentiates a stainless-steel TIG welding machine is the type of ignition. The welding arc ignition can be HF or LIFT:

- LIFT ignition, the welding arc is activated by light contact between the tip of the tungsten electrode and the surface of the base material.

- HF ignition, the high-frequency ignition, unlike the lift one, does not require contact to ignite the welding arc.

Professional stainless-steel TIG welding machines are set up for a high-frequency ignition because this type of ignition performs better and faster. Since there is no need for the tungsten to come into contact with the base material, the possibility of polluting the weld pool and having problems with cracks is practically reduced to zero. The tungsten electrode also lasts longer because the tip is harder to damage.

Multi-process welding machines equipped with a TIG torch with valve also allow welding using the TIG process. Multi-process welding power sources also do not allow machining with the same advanced functions as a professional iron and stainless-steel TIG welding machine. It has a lift ignition and often the usable TIG torch does not have a button on the handle, but a valve for opening the protective gas.

The iron TIG welding machine is an excellent welding generator for working with MMA coated electrode process. Thanks to the 2 dinse connections on each stainless-steel TIG welding machine, you can connect an electrode holder clamp and try your hand at coated electrode welding. Moreover, the most recent models are equipped with Hot-start, Arc-force, and Anti-stick systems to simplify and support the operator in the most complicated phases of MMA welding.
